June, 2012. Microsoft unveils the Surface tablet to lots of fanfare. The device, with its sleek magnesium body and keyboard touch cover, generated a lot of hype in the media. But unfortunately,it was met with much criticism and didn’t sell well. Microsoft even lost $900m on a price write-down.

He was right though, to a certain extent. While Windows Phone has secured 3rd spot in the mobile OS war, many people are still ignorant to the existence of the OS. And while I’ve seen more and more people using Windows Phones in public, few are actually satisfied with their phones. I’m one of those few. Or at least I was.

If you’re a Singaporean reading this article, chances are you own an iPhone or a Samsung device. These are the two manufacturers which are most popular and commonly seen in Singapore. But the world is not just Apples and Samsungs.
Ask everyone who knows me and they’ll say that I am a diehard Windows fan. I’m one of the few people who own a Windows Phone because I genuinely like the Operating System. I got a relative to fly over to the US and buy me a Surface when it first came out. I boldly defended Windows 8 when everyone else was mocking it. And here I am, typing on a Mac. And I’m not using Microsoft Word. No, I’m using -gasp- Pages.
Microsoft and Nokia have made a historical breakthrough with the Lumia 1520. And it’s not just the colossal size of the 6” beast. The Lumia 1520, essentially, marks a new beginning for Windows Phone, and especially for Nokia. It is a first in many things. The first Windows Phone phablet. The first Windows Phone with GDR3 and Lumia Black, bringing support for its monstrous 1080p display, 2.2Ghz Quad core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2 gigs of RAM, and (finally) the ability to close apps. Before we begin, there are a few points to note about this article. The first is that this isn’t a “Windows Phone 8 VS iOS 7” article, but rather it focuses on my thoughts and experiences of using the iOS platform after transitioning from Windows Phone. The other thing to note is that I transitioned from a Lumia 820 to an iPhone 4S (yes, no fancy fingerprint-scanning 5s here, not even an iPhone 5). I understand that the user experience might be affected by the aged hardware of the iPhone 4S, but I will try and write this article strictly as a software comparison, and will try my best to ignore any shortcomings in hardware.
