Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that it’ll be rolling out Windows 10 on the 29th of July. And to the delight of many, it also announced that all existing Windows 7 and 8 users will get a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it rolls out.
But what if you are not on Windows 7 or 8? Well, if you are testing the Windows 10 Insider Preview builds, you can connect it to your Microsoft Account and get a free upgrade to the final version of Windows 10 when it comes out.
Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on July 29th. This will come as just another flight. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from Windows Insiders about how this will work if they clean installed from ISO. As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build. Once you have successfully installed this build, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.
So good news is, if you are running an older version of Windows before 7 and 8, you can get the final version for free by getting the Windows 10 Insider Preview and registering with a Microsoft Account.
If you’ve done a clean install of the preview and no longer have Windows 7 and 8 installed, you’ll get notifications to register with MSA so that you’ll get the free upgrade after 29th July.
So essentially, a lot of users are going to get Windows 10 for free. We’ll see how it goes and update you.
